Scott Gray's Team in Training Page
Last year I got involved with an organization called Team In Training, which is sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Central Ohio. Over the course of several months I was able to raise $3200 to fight Leukemia and Lymphoma, and I rode my bike in the Salisbury Century, a 100 mile bike ride in Maryland.
Well, I’m at it once again. The fight against these diseases goes on, so my fundraising to support the cause goes on as well. This year we will be riding in “America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride”. The ride is June 2nd in Lake Tahoe. During the training period I am also raising money and my goal is to raise $3800 to help with everything from immediate treatment to ongoing research. Last year’s ride was fun, but the real reason I am doing this is for the people who are affected by this disease. This year I am riding in memory of Dennis Trathen. Dennis was a client of the company for which I work. In December of 1999, Dennis was diagnosed with a plasma cytoma tumor on his spine. After removing the tumor and a portion of his spine, everything looked like it was gone. But two months later he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, which is a blood cancer related to leukemia. Dennis went through a bone marrow transplant that was achieved by growing new stem cells from his body. Unfortunately, Dennis lost his battle with myeloma in October of 2001, only hours after I had finished last year’s ride. Too many battles like his are lost each day. Your donations help the fight. The research that gave us the ability to grow new stem cells for bone marrow transplants is just one area that your donations help fund. I was surprised to learn that leukemia researchers developed chemotherapy as a means to fight the disease. This treatment is now used in fighting many different types of cancer. The survival rate for adult leukemia and lymphoma patients has increased from 14% in 1960 to over 43% in 1994 thanks to donations from people like you. Please become part of our team to fund a cure with your tax-deductible contribution. All proceeds fund the Central Ohio Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Donations go towards research programs, local patient aid, and education. |
